Out like a light

Wes just had hopefully the last big procedures before we go home, which required he be put under. He was out for hours during which they took marrow and spinal fluid samples, gave him his first chemo, and installed a semi-permanent port in his chest.

The port is a big deal – it’ll allow most of his blood, meds, and fluids to be delivered or taken without significant pain and needle damage.

He woke up a few hours later, drunk and very hungry and thirsty having not eaten or been able to drink since before midnight, some 18+ hours earlier.

We got him back to the room late, where we opened some presents and then he went to town on much needed junk food like a college kid after too much weed.

Tomorrow should be a pretty big day too – we’re expecting to recuperate, and await the spinal fluid test that’ll tell us whether the leukemia has entered his nervous system.

[…] Tomorrow Wesley has two procedures which will fill in the last remaining gaps of his diagnosis, and will let the doctors lay out a treatment plan. He’ll be sedated while they draw marrow and then spinal fluid, and he’ll also be receiving his first initial chemotherapy. Once the results of these tests are back, sometime late tomorrow or the following morning, we’ll meet with our oncology team and find out what’s next. While he is under, they will also install a port which will make drawing blood and providing him with intravenous medication and fluids much easier for the foreseeable future. […]
